Local emergency personnel at work during the war

Local emergency personnel at work during the January 1942 bombings.

These local civilian men were members of the 3,500-strong Air Raid Precautions unit formed in 1939. They combined with members of the St. John’s Brigade to assist rescue personnel, firemen and police in fire-fighting, evacuation and rescue work during the many Japanese bombing raids.
