The BSAC was largely created by Cecil Rhodes with the express intention of surrounding the Boer Republics and hoping to open up the interior to British-led commercial development with the ultimate idea being to help provide a linking chain in his famous Cape to Cairo ambitions. The BSAC logo of Justice, Freedom and Commerce hints at Cecil Rhodes' intentions and the lofty ambitions that were not always fully shared with the local populations.
