Cairo Road, Lusaka

Taken in 1950, this aerial photograph shows a much more developed Lusaka than the author would have experienced in 1913 when it would have looked more like a frontier town. The Name Cairo road was a euphemistic homage to Cecil Rhodes' dreams of linking Cape to Cairo through the African interior. Image courtesy of The National Archives.
