Sir Edward Twining

Twining was posted to Ireland in 1920 as an intelligence officer in the British army when the I.R.A. was particularly active. He gained some temporary notoriety in official circles when he wrongly arrested Eamon de Valera, the future President of the Irish Republic. When Twining apologized rather contritely to de Valera on his release from prison the following morning, he showed no resentment towards Twining and the two even shook hands on de Valera's departure!
