Rt Rev Dr Frederick Gell, DD, MA (1820-1902), son of Philip Gell of Hopton Hall, Matlock, Derbyshire (the Gell family had lived there since the 16th century). Rugby School. Trinity College, Cambridge: BA & Deacon 1843. Priest 1844 at Ely Cathedral. Curate, Great St Mary, Cambridge 1844-45. Fellow, Christ's College, Cambridge 1843-61: MA 1846; Lecturer, Dean & Asst. Tutor 1849-59. Chaplain to the Bishop of London (Tait) 1859-61. DD 1961. Consecrated Bishop of Madras at Fulham. Madras 1861-98: visited Tirunelveli 1862, 1866, 1869, 1873, 1876. Resigned 1899. Died 1902 at Coonoor.
