The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

Plymouth Sound

This interesting painting by Roland Pitchforth in 1942 shows how busy Plymouth Sound could be in the War Years. There are a number of ships coming in and out of the sound, there are searchlights scanning the skies and you can even see a seaplane at rest in the Sound. The picture is looking out across West Hoe towards Drake's Island.
