The British Empire and its effect on Plymouth

US Lend-Lease Ships at Devonport

In September 1940, Roosevelt helped Churchill as much as isolationist public opinion back in the States would allow him with the granting of 40 US destroyers in return for bases in the Americas. This picture shows the first of those destroyers arriving in Plymouth for refitting in Royal Navy colours and markings. At the point of this picture they still have their US markings. USS Aaron Ward was about to become HMS Castleton and USS Abel P Upsher was about to become HMS Clare.
