Years later in the early 1960s, I was in Nairobi when a man was introduced to me. "Williams?" he roared. "Your father lost the 'varsity match!'" and turned his back on me. My father felt his failure painfully and would never speak of it until, shortly before his death, an article on the game pronounced that the referee should have stopped the Oxford charge.
