Typhoons and Hong Kong

Typhoon of 1937

In September of 1937 a strong typhoon struck Hong Kong, causing much damage. It is reported that 11,000 people lost their lives; presumably the majority were locals living on their junks. 28 ocean-going boats were also damaged or sunk – a good indication of how strong the typhoon really was. This great loss of life ranks the Typhoon of 1937 one of the most damaging typhoons in recorded history.
