Lieutenant-General Evelyn Wood

Sir Evelyn Wood was promoted to major-general on 12th Aug 1881 and lieutenant-general on 1st April 1890. The photo was published in The Navy and Army Illustrated on 17th Jan 1896 with the title 'Lieutenant-General Sir H. Evelyn Wood, V.C., G.C.B., G.C.M.G.' although he had been promoted to General in March 1895. He has a sash over his shoulder which is royal blue with a red stripe down the middle and the Order of St Michael and St George attached to the bow. He has the star for this order next to his KCB cross, and another star underneath which is the Order of Medjidie from Egypt. This photo may well have been taken in 1891 before he was upgraded to the GCB in that year. The arm-band is of black crepe and would be there to mourn his wife who died in 1891.
