Edward Hargraves

Profession:Gold Prospector
Place of Birth:New South Wales

This gentleman was responsible for a massive increase of immigration into Australia. He had been one of many people who had been attracted to California by it's gold rush. He didn't have too much luck, but he was struck by the geological similarities of the gold bearing area there to that of the Macquarie Valley in his native New South Wales. He returned to Australia and quickly confirmed his hypothesis by discovering gold near Bathurst. He was generous enough to share his discovery and, in so doing, started the Australian Gold Rush.
