Captain William Hobson was the man responsible for claiming New Zealand for the British Crown; ostensibly, to forestall French ambitions in the area. He was also responsible for persuading missionaries into convening a congress of Maori chiefs. This congress went on to conclude one of the most important agreements of the nineteenth century British empire: The Treaty of Waitangi.
