The Right Honourable J. Ramsay Macdonald Addressing the House of Commons

This 1923 John Lavery painting shows the shifting political sands of British parliamentary democracy. Macdonald was the first ever socialist Prime-minister of Britain and his election marked a turning point in the history of the Labour movement in Britain. It also marked a period of increasing political polarisation.
