Mary I

Known as 'Bloody Mary', Mary I attempted to return England to a Catholic country. Her grandfather was the King of Spain. She was a devout Catholic and surrounded herself with all Catholic advisers. In July 1554, she married Prince Philip, heir to the Catholic Spanish throne. Despite, her Catholic convictions, most of her subjects were in favour of the Protestant church. Her marriage to the Catholic Philip was deeply unpopular throughout the country. Mary had many Protestant 'heretics' burnt at the stake for refusing to return to the Catholic church. She died a slow and horrible death in 1558 with cancer of the stomach.
