Officers' Ear Boss

The ear boss was placed on the bridle where the head-band joined the side pieces on either side of the bridle. This pre-1901 example is well worn from polishing which suggests that it is brass and white metal rather than gilt and silver. After 1901 the King's crown was used instead of Victoria's Imperial crown. It is fixed to a leather roundel with scalloped edge. Examples of the bit boss have the more mundane VR cypher inside the Garter with the guelphic crown above.
