William John Irwin


William John Irwin was commissioned into the 2nd Bengal Fusiliers (104th Regiment of Fusiliers) as an ensign but exchanged to the 20th Hussars on 17 Mar 1869 with the rank of cornet. He was a Lieutenant on 28 Oct 1871, captain 30 Nov 1879, major 9 Sep 1885 and reached the rank of brevet lieutenant colonel on 28 Dec 1888. He commanded the regiment from 9 Sep 1895. He was very active in the Sudan in 1888 and 1889, commanding the squadron near Suakin and at Gemaizah and also the squadron's operations on the Sudan frontier and at Toski in 1889. The photo shows him in levee dress with the rank of lieutenant in the 1870s.
