The British Army Stationed Before Kabul


This picture by Rattray actually shows the returning British force in 1842 and not Elphinstone's doomed cantonment. This image shows Sir William Nott's camp. He had arrived from Kandahar and met up with Pollock who arrived from Jellalabad.

A mark in the high road, running through the centre of the sketch, indicates the spot where Shah Shuja had been murdered.
