Surrender of Royal Marines


Despite being massively outnumbered, Marine Detachment 8901 put up a determined fight until ordered to lay down their arms by the Governor of the islands. This picture would shock British public opinion at home as it seemed to unnecessarily humiliate the Royal Marines. It helped pull public opinion behind Margaret Thatcher's military response.
