13th Hussars

Pill Box or Forage Cap

The pill-box or forage cap as it was officially called was worn tilted to the right and was usually kept on with a thin black leather strap, although the young Baden-Powell is characteristicly risking it without the strap (see photo). The top is heavily ornamented with a central gold boss and a yard or so of russia braid. The lace is a pattern normally associated with the 'old' hussar regiments, ie the 7th,8th 10th and 18th (they were hussars before 1861).
