Private's Shell, 1795

A sleeveless garment worn over the light dragoon jacket. The button loops are shown in this illustration in the varied ways that were used at different times. Initially the shell was hooked and eyed only near the top, but in the mid 1790s it was done up all the way. The inset on the right shows an alternative back vent. There are shoulder straps to hold the belts in place.
