Officer and Horse, c1813

This is an interesting picture because it mixes the old style jacket with the new shako. It was often the case that when a new uniform was ordered, the hats did not arrive at the same time as the rest of the uniform. Here the new shako is black beaver with silver lace and fittings except for a gold boss on the top and gold caplines. The plume at this stage is short. He looks as is he is wearing the new pouchbelt as well. It is silver lace on buff Morocco leather with a buff silk stripe down the middle, and siver pickers and chains. The horse furniture is crudely depicted here and partly concealed by his elbow. The black sheepskin has a buff coloured dog-tooth edge. We can see the back of his sabretache which is of blue leather. The hessian boots have a black tassle.
