Private c1792

This painting by Francis Wheatley shows the helmet taken into wear by the 15th from 1789 until they were converted to hussars. It is made of hard, blackened leather with a peak, and a black bearskin crest extending over the top from the peak to the base of the back of the helmet. Around the base of the helmet is a dark blue turban held in place with small silver chains. The 15th were distinguished by the wearing of a scarlet plume on the left side and a Badge on the right.

This painting is also useful for depicting the way the powdered hair was styled, in a club at the back, not a queue. The blue jacket has red collar and cuffs but the shoulder straps and wings are blue instead of red since 1790. The swordbelt is worn over the right shoulder and the carbine belt is worn on the left shoulder. The ammunition pouch is attached to the carbine belt. They are buff, as are his gloves and breeches.
