7th Hussars

Private 1825

This illustration by Pierre Turner is based on Denis Dighton painting in the Royal Collection. This view of the private shows more than the painting becuase we can see the way the pouchbelt would support the carbine. The spring clip attaches to a bar on the side of the carbine while a small strap goes round the waist of the butt for added stability. The shako is covered in an oilskin for marching order. Most cavalry regiments clothed the men in grey or blue-grey cossack overalls but the 7th had the distinction of wearing dark blue.
