Private on Queen's Guard, 1845

The men's uniform differed from the officers in quality. The cut of the clothes and the quality of the cloth could not compare with the expensive versions worn by officers. The shoulder scales in place of the officers' epaulettes were decorative as well as protective. There was gold lace on the high collar, this was peculiar to privates of the Household cavalry as the line regiments restricted gold lace to sergeants and above. The carbine continued to be held like this by men on guard until a few years before WW I when swords were carried instead.
