27th Regiment of Foot

Grenadier 1751

The grenadiers were the elite troops of the regiment and often fought separately from the battalion companies, alongside grenadiers from other regiments. They wore mitre caps with tall embroidered fronts. The cap is buff with the castle badge on a blue roundel in place of the usual royal cypher. The tuft on the top has been painted as red by the illustrator, P W Reynolds, but is shown as white in the original painting by Morier. The red coat with buff facings is buttoned up and the belts are worn over the top of the coat. The brass tube attached to his shoulder-belt is to hold the burning taper for lighting the grenades. The lace pattern is a central yellow stripe with a blue zig-zag one side and a black zig-zag the other.
