Other Ranks' Field and Marching Equipment 1811

The soldiers of the 31st Regiment fought at Albuhera with this equipment. The old canvas covered knapsack was clearly marked with a 31 painted on. This was soon to be changed to a black, squared Trotter knapsack. The greatcoat was rolled up on top. A bayonet was slung from the right shoulder belt and a black leather ammunition pouch from the left. Haversack and water-bottle straps were worn on the right shoulder, hanging on the left hip for easy access to food and drink.
