Officer, Light Company c1828

The 31st were a silver lace company up until 1830 when all the line regiments changed to gold. The officer here is probably a captain as the gold fringing on his shoulder wings is fairly large. Subalterns has smaller silver bullion. There are gilt bugle badges in the centre of the chained wings. The sword belt is decorated with a silver chain and whistle and a silver belt-plate with a gilt wreath, numeral and battle honours. See Officer's belt-Plate 1830-47 for the later version with reverse metals. This portrait was sold at auction and named as Lieut-Col G F White 1832. If this officer is G F White then he must have sat for it as a captain, and before the uniform change of 1830.
