Grenadier 1751

The artist David Morier painted men from the grenadier companies of all the infantry regiments as a commission from the Duke of Cumberland. The description of the soldier of the 34th says: Facings and cap frontal yellow, lace white with a blue and a yellow stripe and a blue scroll. Royal cypher on cap blue.

The view of the figure walking off the painting with his legs obscured by a bush is a little odd. What is also odd is the way this soldier carries his sword and bayonet. Every other regiment is depicted showing the sword belt worn round the waist, in some cases over the coat and in others under the coat. Here the sword belt is slung over the shoulder. Presumably he has taken it off and is carrying it in a casual manner.
