Officer, Light Company 1799

This painting is taken from a contemporary drawing made from life by William Loftie. The cap worn here is different from light company caps seen in other sources. It is either white fur with a stiff black front, or it is a tall cap with a white plume draped over the top. The green plume on the left side had become the standard symbol of a light unit. The coat is buttoned over all the way to the waist, as had become the custom at that time but this officer still wears his waistcoat which can just be seen below his waist sash. The waistcoat is red as befits a light company man; the battalion and grenadier companies had white waistcoats.
