Officer's Shako 1855

When the great re-think on uniforms took place during the Crimean War, the shako changed only slightly. It was a little lower than before, 5.25" at the front and 7" at the back. It tapered towards the top and had a peak at the front as before but the rear peak was smaller this time. There was no gilt chin-chain, just a plain black leather strap, 0.75" wide. The badge was much simpler in design with a clear 34 on black leather in the middle. The ball tuft is supposed to be half white and half red but the regiment took it upon themselves to have two thirds red and one third white to emphasize their special distinction. They defiantly retained this distribution of colour until the introduction of the helmet in 1878.
