Sergeant-Major c1880

The special pattern tunic is now a little less flamboyant than the one worn by the RSM a decade earlier. The cuff decoration is smaller but basically the same shape. There is still the same collar badge but the collar is lower than before. We cannot see his rank badge but it is probably the same as the 1870 four chevrons and crown. After 1881 RSMs wore a crown only on their right sleeve. This photo was taken in Burma where the blue cloth-covered home service helmet was replaced by a foreign service khaki helmet with badge at the front on a cloth backing. This badge looks the same shape as the glengarry badge. See Other Rank's Glengarry Badge 1874-81
