Field Officer, Light Company 1763

This portrait is of Col George Maddison who became a Lt-Col in the 4th Foot in 1763. The regiment were in the West Indies at that time and a Light Company had been formed of the best marksmen in the regiment. Maddison commanded this company in Guadaloupe.

He wears a light infantry cap which has a blue stiffened front with a wave shape top. The Lion badge is clearly visible. The turbulent red mane is an odd feature for soldiers who would benefit from being less conspicuous. The coat is shorter than those worn by battalion companies. Other differences include the lack of lace, the narrower lapels and the smaller cuffs. He has a small silver epaulette on his right shoulder. The waistcoat and breeches are white and he has short black boot, or gaiters. The white leather sword belt is worn over the coat and has no belt plate at this period.
