Sergeant and Private, c1910

The Manchesters had worn Lincoln green facings until 1881 when all the non-royal English and Welsh regiments were ordered to change to white. The Sphinx collar badge was inherited from the 96th Foot and is here depicted by Harry Payne as a bi-metal badge but was more likely to have been silver. The private in the forground is a veteran with long service as is evident from the four good-conduct stripes and the maroon and white ribboned medal for Long Service and Good Conduct. This is worn next to his two South African War medals from Victoria and Edward.
