5th Volunteer Battalion, 1914


The Manchester Regiment had two regular battalions in 1914, the 1st was stationed at Jullunder in India and the second at Curragh in Ireland. The 3rd and 4th battalions were Special Reserve and found by the 6th Royal Lancashire Militia. The 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th(Ardwick), 9th and 10th battalions were in the territorial force. All were called up for service in France and Flanders and had served in the South African War. The uniform was the same for all battalions except for the 6th which had yellow facings.
