Private, Foreign Service 1899

The private is in marching order and wearing a white foreign service helmet as would have been worn in Malta where the regiment served at this time. The helmet was worn in full dress when in a hot climate, with the brass badge and spike, and also for marching order. The tunic, here, is not the same as for full dress, but the frock which has no white piping down the front and at the back on the vents. The red shoulder strap has the title DERBYS in brass. The chevron is a good conduct stripe.

The trousers are tucked into black leather gaiters. His equipment is the 1888 Valise Equipment but without the knapsack which was carried high on the back. The rolled greatcoat is strapped to his waist with a mess-tin in a black cover placed on top. There are two ammunition pouches on the front of the waist-belt each carrying 50 rounds for his Lee Enfield rifle.
