This pre First World War illustration by Ernest Ibbetson depicts the full dress which was soon to be abandoned in favour of khaki. They both have a scarlet tunic with grass green facings which were revived in 1905 after 24 years of white facings. The sergeant has pointed cuffs and green shoulder straps which have a brass title. The collar badges are the Sphinx of Egypt. He has white gloves but the private in the background is showing a gloveless hand. The officer has a smarter tunic with gold lace around the collar and cuff. The Russia braid follows the edge of the cuff lace and runs along the bottom of the collar. He is a captain with 3 stars on his gold cord shoulder straps. His sword is suspended from gold straps attached to a webbing belt which is beneath his tunic. Around his waist is the crimson silk sash which before 1902 was placed over his left shoulder. |
