The Warwickshire Regiment

Major, Review Order, c1904

This officer of the 1st Battalion wears the two Sudan medals for the campaign of 1896-8. The photo was probably taken in India where the regiment were posted after their tour of duty in the Sudan and Egypt. This would explain the white tropical helmet, which has a bi-metal badge on a red square patch. The antelope badge is repeated on the collar, being silver with gilt coronet and chain around its neck.

The tunic is scarlet with dark blue collar and cuffs decorated with gold lace and Russia braid. Before 1902 the lace and braid were more ornate and increased in complexity with each stage of rank. There was also an extra loop on the blue cuff. After 1902 the gold decoration was simplified so that the only way to tell an officer's rank was by the shoulder badges. The other change at this time was the placing of the crimson sash around the waist instead of over the left shoulder.
