Superintendent Full Dress, c1890

This is Sam Steele who was an important figure in the history of the NWMP. He has a medal for the North West Canada campaign of 1885. It is interesting to compare his uniform with the colour illutration of a Superintendent 1886. The tunic is still all scarlet, including collar and cuffs but he has a double knot on his sleeve of round back gold cord traced with russia braid. The shoulder cords are more in line with the British dragoon type but unlike the British regiments, the rank badges are on the collar. The plain brown leather belts of 1886 have been replaced by gold lace belts with a purple stripe down the middle. The sword slings are also gold and purple and the sword knot is gold. His breeches are dark blue with yellow stripe and boots are black.
