9th Gurkhas

Medical Inspection of Recruit, 1901

The lieutenant in his white helmet is in the uniform of the Medical Corps. The man behind him is his Indian medical assistant. It was important to give all recruits a thorough inspection on their arrival. Some had illnesses that had not been discovered and officers had to spot the sick boys who might have hookworm, tuberculosis - which was the scourge of the Nepalese hills - or chronic malaria, endemic in all Gurkha regiments.
