Risaldar-Major c1897

This was painted by Paul Chater from a photo taken in 1897 when he was in London for Queen Victoria's diamond Jubilee. It is of Risaldar-Major Kesur Singh. So in fact he is in the 5th Cavalry. He is wearing a special cummerbund with stripes instead of the usual Paisley one that is worn in the accompanying black and white photo. Also his breeches are white like those worn by British officers, not the loose grey breeches normally worn. The artist has made his kurta green and it was supposed to be green but as time went on the 'green' became blacker and blacker as was the case in many rifle-green regiments.
