104th Wellesley's Rifles

Subadar-Major Hasan Muhammad, 1909

Muhammad had been promoted to Subadar-Major in 1908. At about this time he was included in A C Lovett's painting of Rajputana officers that was published in 'The Armies of India' in 1911 (see Subadar-Major 1909). When the War broke out in 1914 he had 28 years service behind him. He was amonst those of Wellesley's Rifles unfortunate enough to be captured by the Turks at Kut-al-Amarah. At first he was cajoled by his captors to renounce allegiance to the British Government and accept the 'Sword of Honour' offered as Moslems and co-religionists, and take up arms on behalf of the Kaliph. He set the example of taking the sword, then throwing it down and stamping on it. For this, he and those who followed his example were dragged away to solitary confinement. He subsequently was appointed to the Order of British India with the title of Sardar Bahadur, and received the French Croix-de-Guerre. He retired in 1920 holding the Honorary rank of Captain.
