23rd Madras Native Infantry

Havildar-Major and Other Ranks 1897

The senior Warrant Officer sits in front of a group of Havildars, Naiks and sepoys at the regimental depot. This could be Secunderabad which is where they were in 1914. The Havildar-Major has his red sash on his left shoulder while the Havildars have theirs on the right shoulder. The interesting aspect of this photo is the pair of artillery pieces on each side. In front of the guns are men who hold rammers for pushing the charge and shot down the barrel, and an NCO in command of each gun team has his fist raised. One Havildar has a dog on a lead, perhaps an important member of the regiment. The photo was published in the Navy and Army Illustrated 10th Dec 1897. The regiment changed it's title from 23rd (Wallajahbad) Madras Light Infantry in 1903 to 83rd Wallajahbad Light Infantry.
