Captain W C Forrest, 1841

William Charles Forrest was one of the officers that Cardigan quarrelled with. He was one of the best officers in the regiment but Cardigan regarded him as the leader of the 'Rebels'. When Forrest's wife suffered a difficult birth, he was refused compassionate leave and complained to Cardigan. The Duke of Wellington was drawn into the dispute, as he had been on numerous other occasions, and lost his temper with Cardigan, rebuking him for his 'foolish quarrels' with his officers.

Forrest is seen in this painting in the early uniform of the newly created 11th Hussars. The dark brown fur busby is very tall with a white over crimon plume. The collar of the jacket is open at the front, the edges sloping back which remained a feature of the 11th's uniform.

Forrest was in the Crimea but he was not in the Charge of the Light Brigade, perhaps because of illness. But his career progressed to the rank of General and he was Colonel of the 11th for 17 years until his death in 1902. see General William Charles Forrest
