In Febraury 1884 Stewart accompanied General Gordon to Khartoum where Gordon was proclaimed Governor-General and Stewart was appointed Lieutenant-Governor. In March the army of the Mahdi laid siege to Khartoum and this continued until January 1885. While the siege was going on, Gordon ordered Stewart to proceed down the Nile by steamer to Dongola with the French Consul and and Irishman named Power. But the steamer struck a rock just below the Island of Kaniett. The party was invited to land on a smaller island called Um Dewarmat with their interpreter and enjoy the hospitality of an Arab Sheik named Sulieman-wad-Gamur. While they were enjoying dates and coffee, Suleiman and his men charged in and a fight ensued. Stewart and the others were overpowered and executed. General Gordon was killed at Khartoum on 26th January 1885.
