Amphibious Valentine Tanks

In preparation for the Normandy landings, the 13th/18th trained with DD Valentines. These were Valentine tanks converted to an amphibious role with Duplex-Drive and a rubberized canvas screen attached to the hull deck. Training was carried out in choppy water in the Moray Firth. The crews were issued with breathing apparatus in case they sank which is what happened to two DDs with one fatality. The Valentines were replaced by Shermans for the landing on D-Day. Two squadrons were asigned to DDs and proved themselves the most successful of all the armoured units.
