13th Dragoons


Richard Brunton



Brunton gained war experience as an infantry officer during the Peninsula and waterloo campaigns. He was severely wounded at the battle of St Pierre d'Arrubo whilst serving in the 6th Cacadores. He joined the 43rd in November1808 and by 1813 was a captain in the 60th Rifles. He joined the13th Light Dragoons as a Captain in April 1819, became a Major in 1826and was Lieutenant-Colonel of the regiment from December 1830 to December 1833.
The portrait shows him as a captain in 1919. He wears the light dragoon uniform introduced in 1812. Blue coat with buff facings and gold epaulettes, buttons and belts. His pouch belt does not have the honour scrolls that appear in other contemporary portraits. Round his waist is a gold and red striped girdle. His left arm rests on his shako which is attached to him with gold cord cap-lines ending in tassles. The shako is black beaver with gold lace and fittings and a white over red plume. His overalls are grey with a gold lace stripe. The medals are Waterloo and the Portuguese cross of Distinction.
