13th Dragoons

Captain Cudjoe

The leadership of Captain Cudjoe brought terror to the British planters and their faithful slaves. Mansions and plantations were burned and white people were killed. The black slaves who worked for the whites were forced to spy for the Maroons and were thus treated with suspicion by their masters, and a huge wedge was driven between blacks and whites. Cudjoe himself was born c1680 and led the Maroons from 1735 to 1738 in which year the treaty was agreed upon. He died in 1744 and is still remembered today as a local hero in Jamaica.
