Lieutenant-Colonel 1899

The 14th were mobilised for service in South Africa on 9 Oct 1899 while they were stationed in Newbridge, Ireland. But illness amongst the horses delayed their departure until the middle of December. The uniform was a khaki drill frock with khaki jodhpurs and brown leather Stowasser boots. The brown leather 50-round ammunition bandolier was worn over a double-strapped Sam Browne belt that supports a holster for his Webley pistol, ammunition pouch and 1896-pattern cavalry sword. There is a canvas haversack hung from his right shoulder, neatly folded under the sword.

He has silver regimental collar badges and a whistle attached to one of his leather shoulder straps. This photo is of the commanding officer Lieutenant-Colonel G H C Hamilton who took command earlier that year.
