Unofficial Arm Badge 1906

The silver NCO arm badges were worn in all orders of dress until c1904 when they were often replaced by other badges. The photo of the sergeant on the right was taken at Shorncliffe in 1906 on the eve of the 14th's departure to India. Both these photos are from the Linaker and Dine book on cavalry arm badges. They state that the badge worn here is black and gilt, taken from the left side collar of an officer's frock. It seems rather large for a collar badge , especially when compared with the silver collar badges worn by this sergeant. This version of the eagle has a gilt FR cypher, being the symbol of King Frederick of Prussia. There is another photo of a corporal of the regiment wearing a white tropical uniform in India in 1907, also wearing this badge together with black and gilt collar badges.
