Regimental Sergeant-Major 1917

RSM J Goddard MC would have posed for this study of him at Tidworth after the First World War. It is part of a painting of the 14th Hussars at the surrender of Kazimain on 11 Mar 1917. Goddard was part of the RHQ party that accepted the surrender of the town elders. His uniform is officer quality with a Sam Browne belt which has a pistol holster attached. His sword is attached to the saddle and the scabbard has several items attached. The lowest item hanging below the level of the horse's belly is a water-bottle. One of the other items seems to be a nose-bag for feeding the horse, with tethering pegs inside. He wears puttees instead of riding boots but his ankle boots look brown instead of black like the other ranks. There is a rolled blanket on the back of his saddle with something laid on top, possibly a foul weather cape. RSM Goddard remained with the regiment until 1925 by which time it was titled 14th/20th Hussars.
